Chapter 6: I’m Here For You

Serene

“Bitch, when were you gonna tell me that you started working at the damn hospital and for Renee Oliver Washington?” Red nudged me later on that week in the bookstore of the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Red was in her third year of Nursing school at Johns Hopkins University, but she’d hang out with me when she didn’t have any classes. And I would do the same for her.

“Red, I can really use the money. That’s why I’m doing this. And I haven’t even started working with her yet. I just started training at Johns Hopkins on Monday; it’s only Thursday and I’m already beat. These twelve-hour shifts are no joke. Not to mention, Amora is staying with me now. Mama’s nanny moved in with me to help me with her.”

I hadn’t spoken to Mother since last Sunday, when I told her about what happened with Amora. I wasn’t going to give my mother any time to try and find out what happened to Amora. If I left it up to her, she wouldn’t have done anything until after the boy abused another girl, and probably not even then. I went to the police station Monday morning after dropping Amora off at school. I missed my first class, but I knew the professor, thanks to Justin. I went to the captain of the Baltimore City Police Department, Captain William Prescott. After I explained to him what was going on with my sister, he told me that they couldn’t press any charges without my sister telling them who the person was, but he promised to send someone undercover to investigate the church.

Red shook her head at me. “Boo, you’re doing too much. You quit your other four million jobs, but you picked up a twelve-hour shift, you’re taking eighteen credits, you took on the responsibility of a child, and you’re about to help take care of Jamie, who I still haven’t gotten to see by the way. I’m doing clinicals at that damn hospital, and do you know the muthafuckas still won’t let me go to his room and see him? I’m like damn, who the fuck do I have to fuck around here to get in that boy’s room? Got-damn!”

I rolled my eyes. “Well, you tried that approach, and it hasn’t worked for you yet, so you might as well give that thang as rest, honey.”

Red shot me a slighted look. “A’ight now, Serene. I’m not about to take too much more of you and your people slick calling me a hoe and shit.”

I shrugged, looking at her. “I mean, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s a-”

Red cut me off. “A can of whup-ass.” She shoved me. “Anyway, bitch, I need a job, too. I can use the money too, boo, so hook me up. Holla at your girl for me. When is Jamie going home anyway?”

“In a few weeks.” I picked up a pack of assorted highlighters and a pack of post its.
